About Laurel

Laurel Mowatt
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website.

My name is Laurel Mowatt and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Psychotherapist (CCC) working in Vancouver, BC. I am a graduate of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and The Adler School of Professional Psychology. I have a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology as well as further certification and training in several areas including On-line Counselling (cybercounselling), Grief and Loss Counselling and Parenting.

As a therapist, my own life experience certainly has influenced my counselling work. As a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend I appreciate the joys and challenges associated with living in today's complicated and often frenzied environment. It makes great sense that there are times in life when everyone one of us feels challenged.

While Vancouver is very much home, I have also enjoyed the opportunity to live overseas which has provided me an expanded perspective on the challenges associated in living in a community without your usual support network or familiar cultural comforts. I understand how it is possible to feel lonely and crave connection yet at the same time surrounded by people.

I have valued the opportunity to volunteer in my community. I feel my life has been greatly enriched through my associations at the Red Cross, Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. It has been a privilege to share life experiences with those I have come in contact with, which ultimately has very much enhanced my own personal growth.

I believe my clients possess the skills and abilities to face their life challenges. While I am fortunate to receive referrals from Medical Practitioners as well as Employee Assistance Programs, I very much welcome individuals to contact me directly. You do not require a referral to make an appointment.

I use a variety of approaches and techniques in our work together. While my core philosophies have developed from training in Adlerian Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) I also have been trained and utilize techniques from Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT), Hypnosis, Family Systems, Family of Origin and Client Centered Therapy. Our work together will be designed uniquely for you to best address your own personal concerns. Together we will design the most effective approach for you to accomplish your goals. I have experienced working with clients addressing many challenges including:
  • Anxiety, worry and panic
  • Depression and sadness
  • Grief and loss
  • When only one person attends counselling
  • Personal growth, self esteem, confidence, assertiveness
  • Establishing boundaries
  • Relationship concerns with partners, work or family members
  • Life and career transitions
  • Stress reduction
I also have a specialized interest in working with individuals who are People Pleasers, Good Girls and Good Boys.

I hold the optimistic belief that throughout our lives, no matter what circumstances life provides, each of us possess the ability to change and grow. Challenges can provide significant opportunity for growth. I believe that life is meant to be enjoyed and I wholeheartedly commit to working with you to make that a reality in your own life.

I endeavor to offer compassion, kindness and creativity in a non-judgmental way to the work we do together. I look forward to meeting you and sharing your journey.
